To block well in football, a player must follow proper technique and blocking fundamentals and, more importantly, a player has to play with the correct attitude and demeanor. Blocking another player properly requires a desire to punish the opposing player. A blocker can achieve this desire through hard work, attitude and by following a few simple steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Treat any opposing player as if he stole something from you or insulted your mother. To block well in football, a player must build an animosity for another player even though this player never did any wrong. This manufactured animosity helps the blocker focus on punishing any opponent that is unlucky enough to get his way.

  2. Step 2

Explode out of your stance when attempting to block well in football. Whether it is running or passing a blocker should create as much initial forward momentum as possible. The difference is that on a running play you want to drive the opposing player back, and on passing plays, you want to form a wall to protect the quarterback after the explosive initial contact.

  3. Step 3

Keep the feet moving for the entire time you are blocking on a play. If your feet stop moving, it decreases your momentum on the block. Therefore, you must stay in motion even during pass blocking.

  4. Step 4

Complete each blocking assignment on every play. Normally as a blocker, you must block a specific area or player on the field. When you block this player or area, it is imperative that you block until the whistle sounds, signaling the end of the play.
