1
Plan out your budget for purchasing a translator/dictionary. There are dozens of options that represent the gamut of price ranges. Know what you are willing to spend before shopping, in order to narrow the field and keep yourself from feeling overwhelmed.
-
2
Find out what languages the translator works with. Some dictionaries only translate a few languages, while others have an amazing array of options for translation. Think about where you will be heading and what languages you will need to translate when comparing dictionary/translators.

3
Inspect the size of each translator/dictionary. Some are incredibly small, and some are bulky. Traditionally, the smaller ones are the more expensive models but not always. In addition, there are programs you can purchase for your palm pilot and other personal organizers. This is a nice touch, as you do not need to keep a new item with you.
-
4
Determine how much memory you need for your translator/dictionary. Most packaging and websites will boast about how many words the dictionary has. Depending on the size of the memory, each dictionary/translator will store as much information as possible.
-
5
Discover whether or not you need a speaking model. Some translator/dictionaries will phonetically pronounce what you are translating and some are read-only. Think about whether you will have a difficult time reading the screen and might prefer a talking translator or whether you would be embarrassed in a new land to have a translator speaking for you.
