The common lamp sits forgotten most of the time yet it brightens the decor of the home, offers light to the printed page and sets a mood. Making your own lamp is easy and allows you to customize a piece to match any artistic vision. Knowing how to wire and connect the lighting lets you build the lamp you always wanted.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lamp base
  • Lamp Kit
  1. Step 1

Select an object that fits your decorating vision and is of a size suitable for a lamp. Use hollow or easily drilled items such as vases or woodwork. Verify the piece is stable even with the additional weight of a lampshade on top.

  2. Step 2

Measure the height of the item carefully and purchase a lamp kit with the required rod length. Consider the length of power cord needed for the location chosen. Select the style of hoop or lampshade connector for the lighting fixture.

  3. Step 3

Choose a lampshade that works well with the lamp and the decor of the home. Consider size and weight both from an aesthetic view and stability when placed onto the lamp. Fabric thickness and material play a part in lighting; verify the shade will allow the correct amount of light out.

  4. Step 4

Push the lamp rod assembly through the top of the base and out the bottom. Connect the locking nut, hoop assembly and socket cover. Pull any slack out of the power cord from the bottom of the base.

  5. Step 5

Install a bulb that meets the wattage requirements of the lamp, into the socket. Plug the lamp in and ensure it works properly. Install the lampshade, tighten it down with the lampshade locknut and enjoy the personal touch you have added to the home.
