How to Begin Learning Gymnastics

Gymnastics is an exciting and challenging sport. The flexibility and acrobatic skill involved in pulling off a good gymnastics routine shows an admirable amount of athleticism and dedication. However, learning gymnastics is no easy road and is certainly not for everyone. Breaking into the gymnastics field can be challenging and fun for most beginners. Learn to do gymnastics safely and effectively and become the athlete you always wanted to be.

      Be realistic about your relative fitness level and your age. Know that most gymnastics athletes begin at a fairly young age and thus develop into their skills as their bodies adjust to the demands of the sport. Talk to your doctor about beginning a gymnastics practice if you are over the age of 12 or 13 to assess your relative fitness level.

      Find a local gym that teaches beginning classes to both adults and children. Ask around to find out which gym is best and sign up for a beginners class. Consider taking a conditioning or stretching classes to start out before diving into a tumbling course.

      Work to improve your flexibility in a conditioning and flexibility class. Learn the basics of good form through these classes and supplement your study with a good yoga practice to help you to improve the depth of your flexibility.

      Start your tumbling practice by learning basics such as the cartwheel and round off. Master these basic tumbling passes before attempting to move on to other tumbling skills. Work with a knowledgeable coach and, if necessary, put in extra time to help develop your tumbling skills. Without these foundations nothing else can be learned. Note that the older you are, the more difficult tumbling will be to learn because you are dealing with more size and mass.

      Get a trampoline or find somewhere you can have access to a trampoline to help you loosen your muscles and assist in tumbling mastery. Try signing up for a dance class to further your flexibility practice. If dance is not your best medium, then consider Pilates to strengthen and lengthen the muscles.

      Do handstands and headstands at home in your spare time. Set aside a specific area in your home where you can easily do stretches, handstands and other simple gymnastics conditioning exercises.

  • Consider getting a personal coach that attends your gym. Often older students will be more than happy to offer extra assistance for a meager fee or through a service of the gym to assist beginners in their journey.

  • Strength training is important, especially for male gymnasts, so begin a cross-training routine that helps you to build muscle and strength to prepare you for apparatus conditioning.

  • Dabble with various gymnastics apparatus such as balance beam, vault and rings only after you have a strong foundation of strength and flexibility on the floor.

  • Do not attempt any tumbling passages or stretches without first checking with a coach for proper form and instruction.
