Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Review the types of role-playing games. These include Fantasy, Science Fiction, Superheroes, Mystery and the Middle Ages. Each game features unique character classes. Visit gaming websites like RPG Now to learn about the games. Download demo games to read (see link in Resources).
Step2
Reflect on the heroes that inspire you. Decide which game type best fits that character. Choose two or three games within the genre.
Step3
Observe several playing sessions for each game. Question the Game Master and players. Model a test character after your hero. Even if the system doesn't provide them, assign your hero's weaknesses. They define the hero and make him human.
Step4
Develop your character's history. Work with the Game Master or GM, to find personal enemies for your character. Select a hometown, family and childhood friends. Many RPGs provide GMs with non-player character charts. Players can use these to add more detail to their characters. Create one to three precious memories for your character—first childhood, first birthday and first kiss.
Step5
Decide clothing style, favorite expressions and secret fears. Many Game Masters give additional experience points for good role-playing. The more details the player creates, the richer the character becomes.
