Hitting a half court shot in basketball is one of the most exciting things that can happen on the court. A player must be able to understand game situations and let the opportunity present itself to take the half court shot. While it is difficult to hit this shot, with the correct technique and enough practice, any person can make a half court basket.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand the game situation and the time left on the clock. You do not want to take a half court shot in a basketball game unless you have to. Half court shots usually happen as the clock is running out during a quarter or in desperate situations.

  2. Step 2

Grab the basketball on the rebound or catch the ball on an outlet pass. Then begin to dribble the basketball toward the middle of the court. The best place on the court to hit the half court shot is directly in front of the basket.

  3. Step 3

Pick up the basketball with both hands. Usually to hit a half court shot a player will need to use both hands on the shot to get the proper distance. Place one hand underneath the basketball so you get the proper rotation on the shot.

  4. Step 4

Bring the ball down to waist level or a little below as you prepare to release the basketball. Bringing the ball lower gives you a little extra power and distance on the shot. Be sure that you only take two steps during this preparation or the referee will call a traveling violation.

  5. Step 5

Step into the shot with the foot on your shooting side and release the basketball towards the basket. Try to use the backboard on the shot if you can. Using the backboard is easier especially if you are in the middle of the court. While you are using both hands on the release, you want the fingertips of the shooting hand to be the last part of your body to touch the basketball. This gives the basketball the proper rotation on the shot.
