How to Conduct a Proper Ghost Hunt

Performing a ghost hunt can take several hours, and in some cases several investigations, to find out the truth. Look for tricks and natural causes that explain seemingly paranormal phenomena as you perform your ghost hunt. Use fresh batteries and have extra on hand in case you need them during your investigation.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to the people who believe they've experienced paranormal activity in their home. Get details such as the time of day, the sounds, sites and smells they experience. Make a list and try to find other reasons why these things occur, like banging water pipes or squeaky floors.

    • 2

Set up battery operated recorders all over the area. Turn them on and let them record the entire time you're there to see if you can pick up any electronic voice phenomena, or EVPs, which are recorded voices that go unheard by the humans who are present at the time.

    • 3

Investigate the property in pairs. You want to make sure to put overly enthusiastic ghost hunters with more skeptical ghost hunters to balance their personalities. Never let anyone investigate alone, as you can't back up what they find.

    • 4

Use a thermal imaging camera to determine heat fluctuations in the area that may not be discernible to you at the time. Keep it recording and pointed in front of you at all times. Try to find natural reasons for any changes you catch.

    • 5

Record everything that happens by stationing video recorders so they record as much of an area as possible, including the doorway. Make sure the view is wide enough to record the entire doorway to avoid skepticism if you do catch something. Also use hand-held recorders as you walk around the area hunting for ghosts.

    • 6

Look for images or items that give you clues that people who live in the home practice black magic or witchcraft, as they're more prone to believe normal incidents are caused by ghosts.

    • 7

Review all your information thoroughly and report your findings to your client. If you find something unusual, go back and try to recreate the situation to make sure it wasn't caused by others moving around during the investigation.
