Some PCs come with small, standard microphones that plug into a port in the back of the computer. These microphones are adequate for projects that don't require high quality sound input but if you use a microphone regularly, chances are you want sound you can really hear. USB microphones offer an alternative to the standard microphone. Here is how to connect a microphone to a computer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Select and purchase a USB microphone. Samson makes three USB microphones to choose from: the C03U multi-pattern mic, the C01U USB condenser microphone and the Q1U-Dynamic USB Microphone. Samson microphones, and most USB microphones, are compatible with both Windows and Mac.

  2. Step 2

Connect the microphone to the computer. Plug the microphone's USB cable into one of the computer's open USB ports.

  3. Step 3

Go through the set-up process specific to your music software. This helps interface the microphone with the program. For example, the Samson website gives detailed instructions for its USB microphones in the site's FAQ section. Programs included are Apple Logic, Apple Garage Band, Cakewalk Home Studio 2, Sony Sound Forge 7.0, Cool Edit, Cakewalk Sonar 4 and Cubase LE.

Tips & Warnings
  • USB microphones connect to and interface with any computer that supports USB devices. They do not require additional drivers such as a proprietary audio driver to work on a computer system.
