Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fishing guide
  • Heavy-duty pole and reel
  • Motor boat
  • Drift boat
  • Fishing license
  1. Step 1

Find an experienced fishing guide. A guide can find the king salmon and lessen your wait to catch the monster fish.

  2. Step 2

Learn how and where to obtain a fishing license in Alaska. Your guide is not responsible for licensing you to fish legally. A guide takes to you to where you can catch a monster fish—your responsibility is to be legally cleared to do so.

  3. Step 3

Schedule your fishing vacation during the 24 hours of daylight in Alaska. This will give you plenty of time to fish for the big one.

  4. Step 4

Work with your guide when trolling. King salmon are often snagged while trolling along the banks of the Kenai River.

  5. Step 5

Set downriggers at various depths to increase the chances of catching a monster fish. Experienced guides use downriggers, T-spoons, Kwikfish and flashers regularly to catch the king salmon.

  6. Step 6

Recruit a guide that can handle a boat well. When the guide can maneuver the boat in a backward trolling motion, it is easier to catch a monster fish.

  7. Step 7

Decide with your guide if you want to fish from the banks of the Kenai River instead of on a boat. If you hook a King Salmon fishing on the banks, run once you have hooked it. Running gives you momentum and will help you win your fight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Anglers in Alaska often waste 40 hours fishing before they hook a King Salmon—with a guide, the time is usually reduced to 24 hours.
  • As with all water sports, make sure you wear a life jacket while boating and in the water.
