How to Capture EVPs

EVPs, or electronic voice phenomena, are the recorded voices of spirits. However, with EVPs, the voice isn't heard by the humans present at the time the recording was made. EVPs are thought to be a way spirits attempt to communicate with the living. Here is how to capture one.

Instructions

    • 1

Set several types of recording devices around the area where you want to capture EVPs. Choose a selection of audio recorders and digital recorders to validate your findings and eliminate the possibility of mechanical malfunction.

    • 2

Stay stationary when recording EVPs to avoid picking up noises you make, such as footsteps or shifting furniture, which can hide or obliterate EVPs.

    • 3

Turn on your recorder and state your name and your location. Ask permission to record and ask any spirits present to step close to the recorder and make their presence known.

    • 4

Ask questions, such as the name of the spirits, if they died in that location, or if they can make a sound to communicate with you. Leave plenty of time after the questions to allow the spirit to gather enough energy to create an EVP you can hear.

    • 5

Listen carefully to the recording you made to see if you captured an EVP. Replay the recording often as it takes time to learn to discern EVP recordings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some paranormal experts believe that white noise, such as a running fan, helps spirits gather the energy they need to create an EVP. If you're not having luck without white noise, try using a small desk fan.

  • Avoid EVP work when there are many people in a home, and avoid EVP work during windy or stormy conditions as you'll pick up too much interference.

  • Remember that if you hear a noise as you record, it may be evidence of something paranormal but it isn't an EVP. Discount footsteps, knocks or thumps you hear on the tape that you also heard while you were recording.
