If you have never worked in the technology field, but have the desire to do so with or without an education, it may be difficult to get started. Most businesses looking for technology staff will focus on people who have both experience and education or certifications. Here is how to make the most of whatever qualifications you do have to land a job working with computers.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Recognize that there are many different areas in the technology field. A single person will never know everything there is to know about all aspects. Technology continues to evolve making it difficult and time intensive for even the experts to stay current.

  2. Step 2

Determine what area of technology or what type of computer job you are qualified for and most interested in and move in that direction.

  3. Step 3

Enroll in some basic technical classes such as an A+ hardware, software or Network+ class or take a couple of application courses in programs such as Excel, Access or html just to get you started.

  4. Step 4

Get a degree or a certification in an area of technology of your choice. It will be easier to obtain employment in the computer technology field if you can show some type of formal training. Potential employers will see that you have seriously dedicated yourself to this line of work and that you have the required skills to get started.

  5. Step 5

Apply for an internship program. This is a great way to gain employment in the technology field. Internship positions usually pay a minimal salary but the tradeoff is well worth it. You will learn a lot about the technology field, have the opportunity to network with people in the field and gain the required computer technology experience to list on your resume.

  6. Step 6

Create a resume, including your education and training experiences along with your certifications and any internship experience. Post your resume on job search sites.

Tips & Warnings
  • Internship performance is important; these positions often lead to full time employment.
