Gathered ruffles add a fancy touch to any sewing project. With just a bit of basic sewing know-how you can add gathered ruffles to pillow cases, quilts, curtains or an article of clothing. Follow these steps.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Determine how much fabric you need to make your ruffle. Measure the perimeter of the item and add one-half to the length. For example, if your piece measures 30 inches around, you will need a piece of fabric that is 45 inches long. Then determine how wide you would like it to be and double that to get your width measurement.

  2. Step 2

Cut your fabric and fold it in half, lengthwise, with the wrong sides together, and press with an iron.

  3. Step 3

Thread a needle with a long piece of thread. Double the thread and make a knot at the bottom.

  4. Step 4

Put your needle though both layers of the fabric about 1/2 inch down from the top rough edges. Make a running stitch using fairly large stitches until you come to the end of your length of fabric.

  5. Step 5

Pin the opposite ends of the ruffle in place on your project. Find the halfway points on both the project and the ruffle. Pin those two points together. Repeat the process, dividing the length into quarters.

  6. Step 6

Arrange the ruffle evenly around the edge. Use as many pins as necessary to keep the ruffles in place.

  7. Step 7

Sew the ruffle in place using a sewing machine. Trim the fabric and do a zigzag stitch around the rough edges to keep it from unraveling.
