Straw hats have been around for centuries. Today, straw hats offer women much more than basic sun protection. Straw hats are fashionable accessories that come in many shapes, colors and sizes. Consider the time of year, your head size, hairstyle and perfect angle of your straw hat when you wear one.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check that it is the appropriate time to wear a straw hat. Generally accepted hat etiquette specifies that you wear straw hats after Easter. Wear felt hats before Easter and straw hats after the Easter Holiday.

  2. Step 2

Choose the right size of hat for your head. The straw hat must not fall over the ears. If the hat comes off too easily or feels loose and wobbly, try a size smaller. Similarly, if the hat makes your head feel itchy or uncomfortable, wear a size bigger.

  3. Step 3

Wear your hair down or pulled back into a low ponytail or bun. If you wear a pony tail or bun high on your head, it interferes with the proper fit of the straw hat. If your hairstyle is compatible, it helps make a perfect fit.

  4. Step 4

Place the straw hat on top of your head and push down on it with gentle pressure. If you wear the straw hat too far back, it will not stay on. If you wear the hat too low, it casts a dark shadow over your eyes.

  5. Step 5

Discover the perfect angle of the hat. Straw hats tend to be really stiff. Often, they look better when worn slightly tilted to one side. Angle the hat to each side of your head to find the angle that looks best on you. Observe the hat in the mirror from each angle and determine which side looks best.
