Step 1
Understand the different sizes. When you look at baby clothing, you'll notice that they go by the baby's age and not his weight or height. This can be deceiving, especially if you have a big baby. Buy a variety of different sizes, especially in the beginning, focusing more on the larger sizes. You know that your baby will only get bigger from here on, so plan accordingly.

Step 2
Find pieces that match. One of the nice things about boys clothing is that it's easy to match. A pair of jeans or shorts can go with just about any top, so you don't have to worry about trying to match colors. In the smaller sizes, choose pieces in one or two shades of blue so that you can match shirts and pants with little trouble.

Step 3
Keep him comfy. It doesn't matter how cute an outfit is, if it's uncomfortable, both you and baby will be miserable. Choose outfits that have stretchy waistbands and soft fabric. During the first few months, newborn gowns are lifesavers because they don't restrict movement on little tummies.

Step 4
Make sure that everything is well made. Always check buttons, zippers and appliqués to make sure that they're secure and won't come off with a bit of tugging.
