How to Hire Musicians for a Cocktail Party

Music can go a long way towards creating atmosphere or livening up a cocktail party. Hiring live musicians may take a little more work than simply bringing in a DJ, but it can make for a more memorable occasion. Decide what type of music suits your party and then research the local talent pool to find just the right musicians. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Conduct a minor survey with those attending to see what genre of music they want to hear at the event. Keep their tastes in mind as you plan to hire musicians for the event.

    • 2

Look on the Internet to find listings for musicians for hire. Music Mates is good place to start (see Resources below). Ask friends or colleagues who had hired musicians if they have any referrals.

    • 3

Contact the agency you are interested in. Listen to samples of music from their various musicians.

    • 4

Ask the agency to give you a sample of the music or past performances of the musicians you want to hire. Check the agency's schedule for the musicians to see if they are available to perform on your date.

    • 5

Sign the contract which states the musician agrees to perform at your event. A booking fee, usually $1,000, is asked at the signing of the agreement.

    • 6

Set up a day to meet with your musicians to hear a live sample of their music. You can also use this time to discuss song selections for the party.
