Step 1
Understand the uses and benefits of batt insulation over blown insulation. Batt insulation is most often used for attics and crawlspaces. It is also available in fiberglass and formaldehyde-free versions, making it healthier especially in small spaces. Consider all the places you will use batt insulation.
-
Step 2
Gather the house plans and take exact measurements for the other areas where you will need batt insulation. There worksheets available at The Home Renovator website (see Resources below). Once you have the worksheets filled out, you can go back and enter the figures into the program to get exact orders, price estimates and local shops from which to purchase materials.
-
Step 3
Estimate up. Whatever you number is when you are done inputting numbers or calculating the entire linear footage of batt insulation, add about 5 percent to that order. This allows for shortages, mistakes and possible additional projects.
-
Step 4
Work the insulation budget into the rest of the project budget. Whether you are doing a whole house renovation or just one room or space, you need to have a solid budget with a little wiggle room for the unexpected, and there is always something unexpected that pops up.
