How to Appraise Used Ford Cars

Ford cars are popular vehicles that keep their resale value well. However, there are so many different car lots offering them, that it's sometimes hard to determine if the car has an accurate appraisal and price. Here's how to appraise used Fords.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the vehicle for a test drive. Note any problems you see with the vehicle, including any odd sounds or bumps. Thoroughly inspect everything about the Ford car that you see. Ford cars include the Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda and Volvo brands.

    • 2

Find what the used Ford car you're appraising has that other similar Ford cars do not. For example, a used 2008 Ford Mustang comes in V6 Deluxe Coupe, GT Premium Coupe and V6 Premium Convertible varieties. Different features come with each different Mustang. Note the type of aluminum wheels that are on the Mustang, the type of interior cloth or leather and the sound system. These are all aspects that may set your Mustang apart from other similar Mustangs.

    • 3

Look up Ford cars on Kelly's Blue Book and Edmunds to see how much similar Ford cars are worth (see link in Resources below). You will want to find the exact model of Ford car that you are appraising and consider its condition. For example, pay specific attention to whether your Ford Focus is an S, SE or SES model and the car's specific features.

Visit Ford car dealerships and ask what a good price would be to sell such a vehicle. While the selling price is often somewhat different from the appraisal price, this can give you a good idea as to how much your Ford Focus, Fusion or Mustang is worth.

    • 5

Look at how much other used Ford car owners are asking for their Ford Five Hundred or Taurus. Respond to these local ads and ask how many responses they've been getting. Because different vehicles are worth more or less in different regions of the country, this is a good indicator of the true selling value of the used Ford car you're appraising. Go and see the conditions of these vehicles and compare them with the Ford vehicle you are appraising.
