How to Handle Cell Phone Recalls

These days, it pays to keep up with some kinds of recalls, including electronics. Hot batteries and other recall problems can be really dangerous if not handled properly by consumers. Here are some steps in responding to a cell phone recall.

1. Find out why. Although most cell phone recalls are due to potentially hot batteries that can explode, other recall reasons may be less urgent.

2. Discard only what's dangerous. A battery recall doesn't mean the phone is bad. Be knowledgeable and reasonable about getting rid of products that are recalled.

3. Use the online resources provided by federal regulatory agencies. the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission maintains lists of recalls and other information on hazardous products (see Resources below).

4. Limit cell phone proximity. To avoid a higher risk, limit time spent on the phone and hang up when your phone gets hot. Avoid sleeping next to your phone or having it next to your body for long periods of time.

5. Stay informed. Read up on what causes hot battery issues and use your knowledge to be smart about purchasing, using and maintaining your phone to give yourself an edge in responding to cell phone recalls as they occur.
