How to Create Cross Ventilation in a Home

Cross ventilation is obtained when cool air from outside enters a building and forces warm air out through an outlet such as a window or door. It's important to create cross ventilation in a home to bring in oxygen and create a cooler environment.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Determine from which direction the wind blows at different times during the day and year. Work with your builder to place windows in strategic locations which will create positive pressure streams to circulate air throughout the house.
Step2
Maximize airflow by aligning doors and windows opposite of each other if you're considering a renovation. Floor plans with rooms that project out from the core area work better than a box type floor plan. This allows for the positioning of windows across from each other without obstructions.
Step3
Consider ridge vents to create ventilation in your home. Two types are shingle-over and filter vent. Exterior wind blows over the vent to create negative air pressure which removes heat and humidity.
Step4
Install wind turbines. They use the wind's natural forces and create airflow for ventilation. Turbines are available in 12 and 14 inches. The 14-inch turbines provide about 30 percent more airflow.
Step5
Open windows on opposite sides of the house to create a cross breeze and turn on a ceiling fan. Open the doors to interior rooms to allow air to flow throughout the house.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cross ventilation does more than cool a house. It flushes out chemical build-up and reduces moisture that can lead to mold growth.
