How to Wear Makeup for Older Women

As you get older, you want to wear makeup that's appropriate for your age but also gives you a more youthful appearance. You can use makeup to hide any flaws like blemishes, age spots and wrinkles, while also bringing out your natural beauty.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use a primer before applying any makeup to your face. A primer prevents your makeup from seeping into and enhancing fine lines. Try the makeup primer from NARS (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Get a makeup set designed with older women in mind. Ask a makeup supply counter for advice or buy the Lauren Hutton Makeup Disk. This set works well for women over the age of 40.

  3. Step 3

Apply cream-based blushes and eyeshadows. Powder eyeshadow and blush will bring more attention to the wrinkles on your face. Cream-based products blend better and hide the fine lines around your eyes and cheeks.

  4. Step 4

Pick neutral shades. Neutral shades like peach and light brown tones give you a fresh-faced appearance. Darker shades close up the face and make you look older than you actually are.

  5. Step 5

Plump up your lips. Your lips can appear thinner as you age. Use a lip plumper and gloss to give your mouth a fuller appearance. Try the Lancome Lip Plumper to achieve this effect.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to use hydrating makeup on your face. Stick to liquid foundations, powders and other products when you're an older woman.
  • Older women should avoid drawing on their eyebrows with a dark pencil. This ages you and doesn't look attractive.
