Before the clutter becomes unbearable, you should look for ways to reduce material congestion and create more storage space in the home. A way to help clear things out is to create more storage space in an attic. Attics usually become unorganized repositories of materials that desperately need some organization. While it may seem like a labor-intensive chore, creating more storage space is a snap given the correct directions.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Eliminate any items from the attic that are broken or useless. Some people are savers by nature and find it difficult to throw anything out. However, keeping this inconsequential clutter in the attic only takes up space.

  2. Step 2

Have a garage sale with any items in the attic you do not want but may have value to others. A garage sale not only creates more space in the attic but it makes you a little spending money as well.

  3. Step 3

Install organizing and storage products in the attic to better organize the items that remain after the clutter elimination and garage sales. Some of these typical products include shelves, hooks, racks and baskets. Installing these products enables you to create more space in an attic by utilizing space in an entirely different way.

  4. Step 4

Purchase storage and space saving products that are specifically for the attic. Some examples of the attic specific products are flooring, stairs and lifts. All of these products create more storage space in an attic at a relatively small cost and little exertion. See the Resources section for more information.
