When remodeling with recycled materials, you have several choices. First, you can use new building materials made from recycled substances. On the other hand, you can reuse second-hand materials that are still in good shape but better than what you already have. Follow these steps to remodel with recycled materials.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Look on websites like Craigslist.org and Freecycle.org for usable materials that people want to give away for free. You can often find wood, sinks, fixtures and much more (see Resources below).
Step2
Visit local construction sites, remodeling sites and dumps to look for salvageable materials. You can often get them for free or for a low price.
Step3
Purchase new materials made from recycled materials if you need to buy a new product but still want to utilize recycled resources. You can find countertops made from recycled paper, tiles made from recycled glass and modular carpeting made from plastic bottles.
Step4
Find new ways to use old materials. For example, you can make a rustic mirror with old barn wood and a piece of mirror glass. Refinish old cabinets to make them look new and beautiful. You can put metal siding on your ceiling or use recycled wood to make a new entertainment center for the living room.
Step5
Remember that adding paint to almost anything old has the potential to make it look beautiful. Sometimes you can find leftover paint at hazardous material collection sites. These places will often keep good paint that people bring in and give it to others who can reuse it.
