Adding a spa to an existing deck turns a backyard into your own personal playground. However, adding a spa is not a simple or inexpensive task. Calculating the cost of redoing your deck is a necessity, whether you will do the construction yourself or hire a contractor.

Difficulty: Easy

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Decide whether you will do the work or hire a contractor. If you will use a contractor, contact several companies to request quotes (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Measure the square footage of you deck. Take your measuring tape and write down the width of the deck. Next, measure the length of your deck. Multiply the measurements to calculate the square footage. This will be useful when selecting a spa.

  3. Step 3

Shop for spas at your local pool store. Spas run the gamut in terms of cost, size and accessories. Look at different options and consider what will fit your deck based on the square footage.

  4. Step 4

Include the extra costs. Inserting a spa into your deck requires a lot of hardware. If you do not own the proper tools to cut out your deck, dig into the ground and safely secure the spa, you will have to rent equipment and buy the tools. Get an estimate from a tool-rental store.

  5. Step 5

Calculate in the cost of running a line of fresh water to your spa. Get an estimate from a local plumber or home improvement store (see Resources below).
