A partially nested hip dormer window interrupts the line of the roof, but adds character to the home. When you build this type of dormer window, you extend the exterior plain of the main building to form the walls of the dormer window. Most dormer windows require two people and more than a weekend to finish.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Design your plan or purchase plans from a professional designer. When you add a dormer window, you need to consider the location and scale. Typically you want to keep your home symmetrical and visually pleasing.
Step2
Cut the hole for the dormer window. For a partially nested hip dormer window, extend the exterior wall plane vertically to the top of the window.
Step3
Frame the dormer window build the exterior sides. Match the siding on your dormer window to the siding on the rest of the house. Popular options include siding, rocks or bricks.
Step4
Build the roof. For the roof, install felt paper, flashing and shingles that match your house before sealing. Typically nested windows have three sloped sides on the roof.
Step5
Install the window and begin interior work, which includes installing insulation and drywall. You also need to finish the ceiling and floor. If you want to add a built-in window seat or bookcase, do these before you finish the interior.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you get building permits and inspections according to your city's regulations.
  • If you have to buy or rent tools to finish the job, a professional builder may offer a lower rate than the amount it will cost you for supplies.
  • Many home owner associations require approval before you modify any part of your home.
