An L motion is one of the basic cheerleading motion techniques. Forming the arms into an L shape, as the name implies, is what it's all about. Cheerleaders perform L motions to both the right and the left sides. When combined with other motions, the L motion is a helpful visual link to a successful chant, cheer, jump or dance. Anybody can learn to do an L motion, so give it a try. Here are the specifics for a successful L motion.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know if you are doing the L motion to the right or to the left.

  2. Step 2

Stand up straight with your head facing to the front. Posture is important. Legs can be together or apart depending on the choreography.

  3. Step 3

Clench both fists with the thumb on the outside. At the same time, raise one arm straight up to the side of your head and push the other arm straight out to the side of your body. Neither elbow should ever bend while doing an L motion.

  4. Step 4

Verify that your hands are in the proper position. The pinky finger on the hand that's straight up should be facing the fans, and the thumb on the hand that's out to your side should be facing the fans.

  5. Step 5

Hold the L motion straight and sturdy for the necessary amount of time and then move swiftly and accurately into the next part of your routine.

Tips & Warnings
  • To make motions sharp, squeeze your elbows tight.
  • Do not bend your wrists on either arm--it throws off the appearance of the L motion.
