How to Recover From Scandal Like Mel Gibson

Academy Award-winning actor and movie maker Mel Gibson is no stranger to scandal, both in his professional and personal life. Mel Gibson's 2004 blockbuster, "The Passion of the Christ" was met with controversy by some groups that deemed the movie anti-Semitic. Two years later, following his DUI arrest in Malibu, Mel Gibson made anti-Semitic remarks, which caused one of the biggest scandals in Hollywood. To bounce back from scandal from Mel, follow these steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Check into rehab and issue a public apology. Shortly after his 2006 DUI arrest, Gibson issued a public apology in which he said he felt "ashamed" and deemed his behavior "despicable."

    • 2

Address the most important issue. Although driving under the influence is a scandal in itself, Gibson knew the anti-Semitic comments he made to the officers who placed him under arrest were the most despised and shocking of his wrongdoings. Shortly after he issued his public apology for the entire incident, Gibson issued a separate apology to the Jewish community.

    • 3

Acknowledge your scandal. While he promoted his film "Apocalypto," Gibson didn't dance around the issue that was really on everyone's minds: his DUI arrest. Gibson acknowledged the awkward timing in an interview with "Entertainment Weekly," in which he stated, "The movie will stand on its own... regardless of any unfortunate experience I may have stumbled upon."

    • 4

Stick with the big names that have backed you. Despite Gibson's infamous DUI arrest and anti-Semitic slurs, he's managed to retain his relationship with Disney following the scandal. Gibson has previously starred in Disney films, and the company distributed his 2006 film, "Apocalypto," which hit theaters in the wake of his arrest.

    • 5

Spin your scandal into something positive. During a 2006 interview with Diane Sawyer following his arrest, Gibson said, "This whole experience in a way, for me, I'm sort of viewing it now as a kind of a blessing because, firstly, I got stopped before I did any real damage to anyone else."
