Making flower pots is a great way to recycle old soda cans. The cans make perfect pots for small plants and can save you a lot of money on pots. Soda can pots can be used as temporary pots for seedlings or propagations instead of purchasing many small pots. However, you can also decorate them and use them as permanent plant holders.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Soda can
  • Sharp scissors
  • Gloves
  • Putty
  • Glue
  • Construction paper
  • Markers, glitter, jewels or other decorative items
  • Ice pick
  • Paint (optional)
  1. Step 1

Wash out the soda can. Thoroughly rinse the can with warm water to get all traces of soda out. If some soda is dried to the can, you may need to let some warm soapy water sit in the can overnight.

  2. Step 2

Remove the top of the soda can with a sharp pair of scissors. For a flower pot, it's best to make the cut below the slant of the can. This makes it easy to load the pot with potting mix and plants.

  3. Step 3

Protect the top of the can. The top of the can will be sharp, so to prevent cuts spread a layer of putty around the sharp edge. Wear gloves to protect your hands while applying the putty. Let the putty dry before continuing with the rest of the project.

  4. Step 4

Prepare the can for decorating. Spread some glue on a sheet of construction paper and wrap the paper around the flower pot can.

  5. Step 5

Decorate the paper. Use markers, glitter, fake jewels or any decorations you like.

  6. Step 6

Poke a hole in the bottom of the soda can with an ice pick. This provides the flower pot with adequate drainage.

Tips & Warnings
  • Instead of construction paper, you can decorate the soda can flower pot with paint. First apply a coat of white spray paint and then spray on a layer of any color.
