How to Make a Deck of Cards
The great thing about making your own deck of cards is you can personalize the deck any way you want. Just make sure the deck conforms to the basic ingredients of a standard deck: four suits each consisting of nine numbered cards, three face cards, an ace and two jokers.

1
Decide what size you want your deck of cards to be. A standard deck of cards is 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches, but you can make the cards any size as long as they are all the same size.
-
2
Make a prototype. Measure out one card on a piece of poster board or other sturdy but flexible cardboard and make an outline of the card. Then, cut out the card.

3
Cut out 53 more cards using the prototype as a guide. This ensures all cards are the exact same size, which is crucial for a fair game of cards.
-
4
Cut out some pictures for the face cards. You can use pictures of royalty or even people in your family. If you use your family, just make sure there is consistency among the four suits so all players know who represents a king, a queen and a jack. Glue the pictures to the cards.
-
5
Create the numbered cards. Because the rules of most card games require numbered cards, you must number the cards 2 through 10. However, you can design the numbers any way you want.
-
6
Use markers to decorate the front of the cards. Because the front is only seen by the player holding the cards, you can be creative and use any colors you want. You can also use substitutes for the suits.
-
7
Design the back of the deck of cards. You must make the backs identical, so drawing the design is not a good option unless you can draw the design perfectly. A better option for most people is to either leave the backs blank, or to print out the designs and glue them on. If you want to use your own design, you can draw it, scan and then print it out so all the backs are the same.
