How to Layer Clothes

No matter what the occasion, layering your clothing makes sense. Even a trip to the store may present you with a situation where you are freezing from the air conditioner or boiling from the heat. Most outings into nature will require the ability to adjust your clothing to suit the weather, so layering is sensible. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Plan the day in your mind before you ever start to put on your clothes. You need to run through the day and events in your thoughts to choose the right clothes and look. Layers will add or subtract from your appearance, and the first impression that you may make on new people. Make the first impressions great. You only get one chance.

Begin with normal foundation items like underwear, top and socks. These will be slightly different for men and women, but you can make the adjustments that are required. If the weather warrants dressing for warmth, slip on a pair of long underwear at this stage. You can even have two pairs in your closet, one lighter for milder cold weather and a pair of heavier ones for cold weather.

Choose the layers that will go on top of the foundation. Each successive layer will be a bit looser to allow for the previous layers without covering the attractiveness of your figure or physique. The closest layer to the skin after the foundation should be a tight fitting t-shirt or pullover. For women, this may be a cami or spaghetti strap shirt. This may show a hint of your bra if you make it down to that layer.

Select something for the bottoms that is sensible yet flattering. For men, the choice should be jeans, corduroy or lined khakis. For women, a layered idea would be to slip on a pair of Capri pants under a long skirt. You can remove the skirt if the weather turns warm and if not, then the Capris will keep your legs warm.

Pick a coat appropriate for the predicted weather forecast. You can always take a lighter jacket in the car or hung over your arm. Don't forget the gloves, scarves and hats. For women, add your accessories at this point and for the men, you are limited to hats and scarves.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always be prepared for the unexpected. You can carry an extra layer over your arm or leave it in the car. Weather can be so unpredictable in most of the world that you are safer to plan accordingly.
