Chickens can make for interesting pets and great farm animals. However, when you are looking to keep chickens in a city setting, different rules apply. Keeping chickens in a city can be rather difficult, requires plenty of space and a knowledge of the city laws.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check the laws and ordinances of the city in which you want to keep chickens. Most cities have very strict rules about housing farm animals in city premises. If the city in which you want to keep the chickens allows chickens, the city likely has strict rules that you must follow in order to keep them. Read those rules.

  2. Step 2

Find out how many chickens you're allowed to have in your city. If your city allows chickens, it likely has rules about how many chickens you can have and how they should be kept.

  3. Step 3

Create a place for your chickens to live, sleep and lay eggs. Generally on a farm this is a coop. You can place a coop on your city property, as long as that is permitted by your city ordinance. Place the coop in an area that is fenced in as large an area as possible on your property.

  4. Step 4

Keep your chickens safe. Chickens don't always do well when they come in contact with many types of animals. If you have a fence around your chicken coop, make sure the fence is made of tightly-knitted wire that keeps animals like woodchucks and raccoons out.

  5. Step 5

Clean the chicken's area each week. The coop and surrounding area should be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized each week. This will help keep your chickens healthy and keep your property well maintained.
