Nursing is a job that requires patience, understanding and great people skills. In some cases, the people you are trying to help will be scared or upset. This can make your job difficult. Helping your patients do overcome their illness can be very rewarding. Having a successful nursing career is possible despite the difficulty of some patients.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Define success. For one person, being a successful nurse means being a nurse whose patients remember her and who are happy to have her take care of them. For someone else, being a successful nurse means getting promoted to the highest position possible or having the most prestigious qualifications and the highest level medical responsibilities. Decide on what you consider to be a successful nursing career and work toward that goal.
Step2
Find a nursing job that you enjoy. Obstetrics, pediatrics, geriatrics and emergency are some of the possibilities. You can also be a nurse in a doctor's office. Finding a job that you enjoy will make it easier to succeed.
Step3
Stay abreast of all of the current research being done in your area of nursing. This will help you to ensure that your patients get the best care possible.
Step4
Be personable with your patients. Friendly nurses can make almost any situation more bearable for a patient and his family. It is important to remember that sometimes, the situation may call for you to be stern. Even in this case, it is possible to be friendly.
Step5
Try to put yourself in your patient's place. This can be very difficult when you are dealing with a patient who is upset or scared. Keep in mind that your patient may be in pain or trying to deal with difficult news.
Step6
Learn a lesson from every patient. This may seem like it would be difficult but learning even the smallest thing from a patient will help you to become a more successful nurse.
