Saying something funny is a good way to begin a conversation with a person that you just met. Laughter is a sign of being happy. Making someone happy is a good way to start off a new friendship. Using humor to break the ice takes a little practice.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use a universally funny remark to break the ice. When you want to use humor to break the ice, you have to make sure that the person you are trying to start a conversation with will find the remark funny. Jokes about touchy subjects are best shared among close friends.

  2. Step 2

Keep the conversation light. You can steer the conversation away from subjects that may cause either on of you to become uneasy. Humor goes best with light easy conversations. It is best to save the deep conversations until later when you know each other better.

  3. Step 3

Make sure that your humor sounds natural. Forced humor, like forced laughter, can put a strain on a conversation and make you seem fake. Your humor should flow like a regular conversation.

  4. Step 4

Ensure that your humor fits the situation. For example, a quip about drunk driving would be a bad choice if you are at a meeting for people who lost children or family members in accidents caused by drunk drivers.

  5. Step 5

Have some back up humor. If you make a funny remark to a girl to break the ice, she will probably assume that you have more quips. Make sure that you do have some back ups.
