1
Choose a central location for your patio drain if you have patio pavers. If the drain is for a deck, pick a spot where the water seems to pool more often.
-
2
Dig a deep trench from the patio drain out into the yard and away from the swimming pool. Make sure the trench is below the frost line in your area. Grade the trench to promote water flow from the actual drain cover.

3
Purchase enough PVC pipe to extend the length of the trench. Consider purchasing pipe that has a few drain holes along the way to diffuse the water as it flows through the pipe.
-
4
Line the trench with pea gravel or some other type of gravel to aid with drainage. Lay the PVC pipe along the trench.
-
5
Use an elbow that's the right angle to fit underneath the drain cover and secure to drain cover. If the drain is on a deck, you'll need an extension directly under the drain and then an elbow at the opening of the trench.

6
Back fill the ditch and cover with fresh topsoil before reseeding with grass.
