How to Spot the Land Sale Telemarketing Scam

The land sale telemarketing scam is a scam that lures people away from their money over the phone. However, this scam works a little differently than other telemarketing scams, as the targeted person willingly calls the scammer. Learn how to spot the land sale telemarketing scam by reading the follow tips.

Instructions

    • 1

Read an advertisement in a newspaper or other public place and notice the advertisement's description of attractive land for sale for low prices. If you're interested, call the number on the advertisement.

    • 2

Listen as the scammer introduces himself. The scammer usually claims that he is a representative of a firm or a company that specializes in land ownership.

    • 3

Pay attention as the scammer tells you about the great property he has available. Something enticing will be included with its description. Prime property may be described and the scammer may say that the land is in the perfect location on which to start a vacation resort or retirement community. Very low prices may also be used to convince you to purchase the land.

    • 4

Wait for the pitch. The scammer will emphasize the deal by repeating the land's supposed great attributes. He'll also tell you that an immediate purchase is necessary because the land will only remain the company's for a little bit longer. The scammer may also tell you that if they can't sell the land, they will have to sell it to another company and the price for it may rise or other buyers will be brought into the market and you'll lose your opportunity.

    • 5

Refuse to pay for the land over the phone. The scammer will try to get you to exchange money and sign contracts immediately. Understand that legitimate land deals don't require you to buy without seeing the property first.

    • 6

Visit the property if you fell for the scam. Note that something is wrong with the land. Locations may be in places other than described or the land may be uninhabitable somehow. Realize that the land had been misrepresented. Your only option now is to try to sell the land and recoup your money.
