Instant messaging (IM) is not just for computer users. Cell phones now come with IM capabilities, and everyone is using them. So how can you get your own IM account? Well, the major search engines today now have their own version of the popular instant messaging software. Follow the steps below to create your own account.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Choose your account service provider. Many search engines only allow you to instant message people on the same service. Therefore, you must choose the service that will allow you to IM the majority of your colleagues.
Step2
Locate the IM software. It is usually accessible through the search engine's website. Check under "Downloads" or "Messaging."
Step3
Turn off your pop-up blocking software. Many of the IM installation programs require add-ons that are often blocked as pop-ups. Turning the pop-up program off before beginning will save you time otherwise wasted in stopping and restarting the download.
Step4
Read the instructions carefully to ensure that you are downloading and using the software correctly. Also close any programs that you aren't using. This will help speed up the download.
Step5
Add your contacts. Most search engine IM accounts have an option of adding your contacts from other email accounts to the IM contact account. Do so before your first IM, so that you can have all of your friends on your account.
Step6
Send a message. After following the download instructions, you will be ready to IM anyone on your contacts list.
