Things You'll Need:
- Waders or water shoes
- Drinking water
- Wearable tackle box
-
Step 1
Determine the need for waders, boots or a simple pair of river shoes. Cold water calls for equipment that keeps you dry. Purchase the style of waders that fits the condition and depth of wading you do.
-
Step 2
Consolidate your tackle to fit in pockets or a waist pack. Vests designed for wade fishing are perfect for fly fishing but are unable to carry the lures bass fishermen often prefer. Shoulder creels are an option that will carry both tackle and fish.
-
Step 3
Remember to bring water, sunscreen and basic necessities. Wade fishing by its nature takes you long distances and it can ruin the day if you have to trek back to the car early.
-
Step 4
Know your limits when wading, expect rocks to move under your feet and hidden branches trying to trip you up. Wade slowly and quietly, taking each step cautiously. Fish can feel the vibration of small pebbles moving in the water and sense changes to their environment. Be extra careful around deep or fast moving water, the power of nature can quickly overwhelm a person.
-
Step 5
Tell someone where you'll be fishing and what time to expect you back. Desolate stretches of river mean little chance of finding help. Invite a friend to keep things safe and offer companionship while fishing. More importantly, you'll have someone to back you up when telling about the one that got away.
