How to Install the MySQL Database Server on a Windows PC

MySQL is a relational database management system (RDBMS). MySQL runs as a server and provides multi-user access to a variety of databases. MySQL is popular for web applications and usually runs with Apache and PHP. Read on to learn how to install the MYSQL database server on a Windows PC.

Instructions

    Locate and Download the MySQL Server Software

  1. Step 1

    Go to the MySQL main download page and navigate to the download page for the product you want to install. Select the version of MySQL Server that you want to install.

  2. Step 2

    Locate the Windows download that you want and select "Pick a Mirror." This takes you to a page that you use to either create a MySQL account and answer a questionnaire, enter your existing MySQL account login information, or go directly to the downloads page.

  3. Step 3

    Select "No thanks, just take me to the downloads!" to skip the questionnaire and go to the downloads page.

  4. Step 4

    Determine which download server you want to use and click on the "HTTP" link for that server. Use a server that is close to your geographic location.

  5. Step 5

    Click "Run" in the dialog box that appears. After the software downloads, the MySQL Server Setup Wizard appears.

  6. Install the MySQL Server Software

  7. Step 1

    Select the type of installation that you want from the Setup Wizard. Use the "Typical" option to install to the default directory. If you want to use a different directory, select the "Custom" option. Click "Next."

  8. Step 2

    Verify that the installation settings are correct on the "Ready to Install" page. Click "Install."

  9. Step 3

    Read the notices about MySQL Enterprises that appear on the screen. Click "Next" to read all of the notices. Installation completes only after you have navigated through these notices.

  10. Step 4

    Click "Finish" on the Wizard Completed page. Uncheck the "Configure the MySQL Server now" option to end the installation without configuring the software.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can configure the software later by selecting the "MySQL -> MySQL Server version -> MySQL Server Instance Configuration" option on the Programs menu.
