How to Cut Fabric for Valance Curtains

When making these valances yourself, you have to cut the fabric properly in order to ensure that it reaches all the way around the wood base of the valance. Instructions

    • 1

Determine the length of fabric you need. Measure the length of the valance board, being sure to include the width of the board itself. This means, if your valance board is 3 ½ inches wide, you have to include 7 inches to your measurement (3 ½ inches on each side).

    • 2

Add 10 inches for the center pleat. After you finish measuring the length of the curtain valance, you have to add 10 to allow for a large center pleat.

    • 3

Include the seam allowance. Add ¼ of an inch to the length of the fabric in order to allow for seams.

    • 4

Mark your measurements. Use a fabric pen or any type of pen to mark where you need to cut your valance.

    • 5

Cut fabric for valance curtains on a flat surface. Lay your fabric out on a smooth flat surface to make sure your cuts are clean and even.

Tips & Warnings

  • Iron the fabric before you cut it. This not only makes it easier to cut the fabric, but also ensures the fabric is properly measured.

  • Always wash your fabric before cutting it. Fabric tends to shrink in the washer and dryer. Unless you plan on never washing your valance, you need to wash it before you cut to make sure it continues to fit after multiple washings.
