Parrots are intelligent pets. You can teach them to talk, dance and even potty train. Potty training a parrot can be very challenging and it requires a lot of dedication and patience. When you potty train a parrot, consistency is the key to success. However, once you potty train your parrot, you will have the satisfaction of knowing your parrot will use the potty in a common place every time.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know your parrot. Many parrots will go to the potty every 15 to 30 minutes, and many parrots will have a particular type of body language before they go. Therefore, before you begin potty training your parrot, study it so that you can learn about its body language before it goes to the potty.

  2. Step 2

Put the parrot over the trash can or over the place where you want the parrot to go to the potty when you know he is going to go to the potty. Do not force the parrot to anything because it could become offensive and refuse to go potty in that place. Place your parrot calmly in the area where you want him to go to the potty.

  3. Step 3

Use a particular word or phrase such as "go potty" while the parrot goes to the potty. Use this word consistently. Soon, the parrot will associate the word with going to the potty and will understand what you are trying to teach it.

  4. Step 4

Speak praise words. When your parrot goes to the potty in the area where you wanted it go, then reward the parrot with a praise word such as "good bird." Do not use treats or food as a praise, because then your parrot will associate using the bathroom with food and will expect a treat or food every time it uses the potty. Parrots use the potty 2 to 4 times per hour, so giving a treat each time the parrot goes to the potty could cause the parrot to become sick.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be patient. Training a parrot to potty train is not an easy task, and it does take a lot of time, dedication and patience.
