Wearing a tuxedo shirt, jacket and vest can be uncomfortable. In order to ease that discomfort, get the proper measurements for the shirt and jacket, with the most important measurement being the neck. If the neck measurement is too small, the shirt is too tight. If the measurement is too big, the shirt is too loose around the neck and looks messy. Here are ways to measure necks properly for tuxedo rentals.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Wrap the measuring tape around the neck. Put on a collared shirt, leaving the top button unbuttoned and measure the circumference of the neck above the collar, holding the measuring tape snugly, but not tight, around the neck.

  2. Step 2

Check the back of the neck. You need to make sure the measuring tape is even all the way around and not sitting higher or lower on the back of the neck than it is in the front in order to get an accurate measurement.

  3. Step 3

Put two fingers (laying flat against the neck) on the inside of the measuring tape when you wrap it around the neck. Placing your fingers in between the neck and the measuring tape allows for a little extra, but not too much, room in the neck measurement.

  4. Step 4

Repeat Step 1 through Step 3. You have to repeat these steps in order to ensure that you have taken an accurate neck measurement.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always have a tuxedo shirt measured by a professional. Have professionals take your measurements instead of doing it yourself to make sure your tux shirt fits perfectly on the day of your big event.
  • Go up to the next neck size. This allows for enough space between the neck and the shirt in order to breathe comfortably and move your neck freely.
  • Never guess your measurements. You run the risk of the tuxedo shirt not fitting properly.
