How to Replace Pinball Glass

The tempered glass covering a pinball machine's playfield can become yellowed, grimy, cracked or broken due to misuse, improper storage or accidents. Replacing the glass over the playfield is a simple procedure once you know a few tips and tricks to get the pinball machine open.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the make and model of your pinball machine and order replacement glass from a supplier or directly from the manufacturer. Custom glass is an alternative if you have exact dimensions and use tempered glass.

    • 2

Remove the coin drawer or front plate from the pinball machine and find the hidden release lever in the upper-right corner. Pull the lever until you hear the mechanism release the anchors.

    • 3

Work a gummed or stuck lever loose by attaching a vice grip to the lever and tying wire or a heavy string to a 10-pound weight. Leave the weight hanging for 30 minutes until you hear a clunk as the mechanism slides open. Occasionally, additional time is required if the mechanism has rusted or contains a considerable amount of spilled soda.

    • 4

Slide out the playfield glass by pulling gently on the glass or a front frame unit on some pinball machines. Squirt a small amount of water between the glass and rail if it does not pull out easily. Carefully place the old playfield glass onto carpet or cardboard.

    • 5

Connect the new glass to the front frame or slide it onto the rails if there is no frame. Position the glass correctly and return the front lever to its upright position. Install the coin drawer or front plate and enjoy the clear view of the pinball machine's playfield.
