A stringer is a thin rod of glass. Stringers are perfect to use on beads that you want to add delicate detail to. You can buy stringers in many stained glass stores to use but it is just as easy to make your own with the glass rods that you have.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Glass torch
  • Glass rods
  • Needle-nosed pliers
  • Safety gear

    Rod Method

  1. Step 1

Prep your work station. Make sure you have everything set up and are using all the necessary safety equipment.

  2. Step 2

    Light your torch.

  3. Step 3

Choose a glass rod and begin to heat the middle of it. Remember to warm the glass rod up slowly in the flame and then turning it continuously so it will heat evenly.

  4. Step 4

Push the two ends of the rod toward the middle when the glass is molten. This will force the molten glass to form a ball of glass.

  5. Step 5

Continue to melt and turn the molten glass ball until it reaches a size of around 1/2 inch in diameter. Remove the glass from the flame.

  6. Step 6

Quickly pull the ends of the rod away from each other. This will create a thin stringer in between them.

  7. Step 7

Melt one end of the stringer free of one of the rods. The stringer is free to be used.

  8. Pliers Method

  9. Step 1

Choose a glass rod and begin heating the end of it in the flame of the torch.

  10. Step 2

Heat one end of the glass rod just as you would if you were making a bead.

  11. Step 3

Grab the glowing glass with a pair of needle-nosed pliers.

  12. Step 4

Slowly begin to pull on the glass with the pliers to create the stringer.

  13. Step 5

Keep the glass in the flame while you are pulling the stringer. You want to remember to keep the thick part of the glass in the flame rather than the thin portion you are pulling the stringer from.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pulling stringers takes practice. You have to know how the glass will behave to get the correct size stringer that you want.
  • Working with glass and a torch always has risks. Wear the proper safety gear such as glasses and long-sleeved shirts when making beads.
