American Legion baseball is one of the greatest experiences a teenager can have. In many parts of the United States, Legion baseball is more prestigious than high school varsity baseball. It can be very difficult to land the head coaching job of the local Legion team. Give yourself a chance with the following hints.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Have previous Legion experience. The American Legion values loyalty as one of its highest qualities. If you previously played Legion ball when you were a teenager, this will help you greatly because they will know you understand the type of commitment it takes to be on the team.

  2. Step 2

Know the players in the area. Most Legion teams draw from several high schools and only allow three days to evaluate them. By being familiar with the best players in the area, it will make decisions quicker and easier.

  3. Step 3

Be a veteran. To join the American Legion, you must be a veteran or a child of a veteran. They value their members highly. If the choice for the job came down to you and another person who was not a member of the Legion, you would get the job.

  4. Step 4

Start as an assistant coach and pay your dues. People rarely start out as the head coach. Put in a few years as an assistant to find out what it is about.

  5. Step 5

Coach one of the teams in the area. With varsity head coaching experience, you will be a much more attractive candidate. The more successful your team, the better you will look. You will also be able to recruit the kids on your team to play Legion for you.

on 10/29/2008 I am a Legion Head Coach and it was the best game on turf for sometime now it is a recruiting, line drawing, play on what was once fun game. I am very upset with were it has gone. However, there are good places to continue the tradition.
