Whether you work from home or you just need a space for your computer, you're thinking that an office space would be great. But the problem lies in that you don't have a spare bedroom or area in your home for an office. You can build an office desk right into any closet in your home.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Shelving brackets
  • Drywall Screws
  • Drill
  • Wood screws
  • Melamine particleboard
  1. Step 1

Prepare your closet. Remove the doors and any shelving that is currently in your closet.

  2. Step 2

Measure and mark the area for your desk. Write down the length and width of your closet space. Also measure for the height of your desk, with a good height being between 25 and 28 inches high. Mark that directly on your wall.

  3. Step 3

Purchase your desk area. A local home improvement or lumber store will sell melamine particleboard in varying sizes. Try to locate melamine that will fill your entire office space in one piece.

  4. Step 4

Gather your supplies. You're going to need shelving brackets to hang as the base for your office desk. If your desk is 24 inches wide, look for brackets at least half of that width, 12 inches or more. You also need two-inch drywall screws to secure your brackets to the wall, half or three-quarter inch wood screws to secure your melamine to the brackets, as well as a drill and level.

  5. Step 5

Locate your studs and hang your brackets. Studs typically are 16 inches apart in a wall. You can hang brackets every other stud. Most closets have studs built into the corners, so try to hang brackets at each corner and one to two in the middle for support. Hang one bracket and use your level to hang the second and third and, possibly, fourth brackets.

  6. Step 6

Place your melamine on top of your brackets. Secure the board to your brackets with wood screws from the bottom through the bracket holes into the board.

  7. Step 7

Determine your desk's stability. If your desk appears wobbly, secure-two by-two trim at the ends of the desk from underneath.

  8. Step 8

Replace your closet doors. You can opt to leave them off, but if your closet is in a spare bedroom, you may not want your guests to see your office area.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your melamine particleboard may measure eight feet long by 23 inches wide. When you purchase it, your home improvement store can cut it down to fit your closet space.
  • Drill a 1 1/2-inch hole near the center of your desk to allow for space to drop cords to an electrical outlet or the computer's terminal.
  • Have two people working on this project, especially at the stage when leveling and installing the brackets.
