How to Be a 10-Key Whiz

Nearly all data entry jobs require skill in 10-key entry--inputting numbers on a three-by-three keypad. If you want to be an expert at 10-key entry, you need to not only be fast with your keystrokes but also accurate in your input.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare yourself for using the three-by-three grid format of number keys. This can be difficult, especially if you use a full keyboard, if you're experienced in word processing and if you are used to the single-row set of keys.

    • 2

Place your first three fingers (index, middle and ring) on the three middle keys (4, 5 and 6). Practice using each finger on the key on, above and below it. This means 1, 4 and 7 for the index finger, 2, 5 and 8 for the middle finger and 3, 6 and 9 for the ring finger.

    • 3

Focus on accuracy first. Make sure you input the correct keystrokes and numbers before you build up your speed. Fast keystrokes do no good if you end up with tons of errors.

    • 4

Look at the keypad every so often if you need to, but wean yourself away from doing this as you progress. It's like riding a bike with training wheels--it's okay when you first build your skill, but you eventually need to succeed without them.

    • 5

Avoid watching the clock. This only slows you down and reduces your accuracy by taking your focus away, even if it's just for a couple of seconds. If you're concentrating solely on the keystrokes, the time will take care of itself.

Tips & Warnings

  • Twelve thousand keystrokes per hour is a pretty good 10-key speed to have. Remember that employers will be expecting accuracy along with this speed.
