Step 1
Practice the fundamentals of the jump shot. There are many parts to the jump shot you need to go over. Find and learn about every aspect of a good shot from the Resources section below. It is important to remember that if one part of your shot is off, it will affect other parts of the shot as well.
-
Step 2
Do drills that mimic game-like situations to get better faster. The only stationary shot you should be practicing is your free throw. Practice coming off screens or picks or look for certain spots on the floor to pull up at. Incorporate conditioning into your shooting practice to work on both.
-
Step 3
Vary the type of shots that you practice. There are many players who can dunk and shoot 3-pointers, but can't hit a jump shot. The 15- to 18-foot mid-range jumper has almost become a lost art in the NBA and in college basketball. This is the area that you are most likely to get space from your defender, so learn to nail these shots.
-
Step 4
Hit the gym before and after practice. Most stars did not get there on talent alone. Be prepared to shoot several hundred shots before and after practice every day.
-
Step 5
Develop a mental routine to help you become a better shooter. Learn to block the crowd and defenders out of your head and focus on making the shot.
