Trying to cover your tracks on a computer isn't just for adult website viewers. Since information security is one of the top concerns of many Windows users, the ability to delete personal information and Web history from your browser can be invaluable.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Go to "My Computer." Look at the "Tools" menu, open "Internet Options" and then select "Delete All." This will delete all cookies, Web history and saved forms and passwords from your browser.
Step2
Delete cookies, Web history and saved forms and passwords from your browser individually. Go to the "Internet Options" menu, open the "History" tab and then click each item one at a time to delete.
Step3
Remove all of the index.dat files in Windows for complete security. From "My Computer," right click on "C:/" and then click "Search." Next, click "Files and Folders" and then "All Files and Folders." Type "index.dat" where the computer asks for a search field. This will delete the hidden history files.
Step4
Overwrite the history tracks of index.dat files. Select "All" and enter zero in every field. Doing this will delete all hidden history files from your computer. Again, this should only be necessary if you really want enhanced privacy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the security settings in "My Computer," "Internet Options" to easily automate your computer's security. Tell your Windows system to automatically delete your history tracks on a scheduled basis. This process does not offer maximum security, but it does provide a nice convenience.
