How to Build a Soda Gun

Many people know what happens when you mix baking soda and vinegar (a small eruption occurs). But what many people don't know is that if you can harness that eruption and let the pressure build, then you can create your very own baking soda gun; here's how.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 2 pieces of small PVC pipe (one twice as long as the other)
  • PVC joint
  • PVC connector with cap
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Cork or tape ball the circumference of the PVC pipe
Step1
Connect all of your PVC pipe together. You want to make sure that your PVC joint has three ends on it. The shorter piece of PVC pipe fits into the bottom of the joint (this is your gun handle). The longer PVC piece is perpendicular to the handle (this is your barrel). And the final PVC connector is placed into the third end of the joint. This is where you will load your ammo.
Step2
Stuff a wine cork or tape ball into the barrel end of the PVC pipe. It is important that the seal is air tight so that pressure builds inside the gun. So if a cork isn't the right diameter for the size of PVC pipe you have purchased, just make sure the tape ball is tight.
Step3
Pour a healthy amount of vinegar into your soda gun.
Step4
Add a scoop of baking soda into the soda gun.
Step5
Place a cap over the spot where you loaded your ammo. Your soda gun should now be completely sealed.
Step6
Rock your gun back and forth so that the vinegar and baking soda become well mixed with one another.
Step7
Aim at your target as you continue to move your gun around. This does make aiming exactly a bit difficult, so be sure to shoot in the correct general direction.
Step8
Watch as the cork explodes out of the gun. After enough pressure has built up, the cork will fire. Then simply wash out the baking soda and vinegar and reload.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never point this gun at anyone's face. In fact, if you are playing with friends, eye protection is a must.
