Computers can be frustrating, but for many they are a necessity in today's world. One thing that makes people angry is having an error message stop your work in its tracks. Luckily, computer and software companies have people on duty to help resolve the problem. Before you call the tech support helpdesk, take some time to prepare by reading the below tips.

From Quick Guide: Computer Services Jobs
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Write down the error message. When your computer hits a road block, most often it will tell you what the problem is. Error messages are mostly written as a nonsensical series of letters and numbers. Reread the message because you need to accurately convey it to the tech support helpdesk so they can remedy your problem.

  2. Step 2

Find the version of your software and the type of computer you have. This is also important because software is constantly updated, so the exact version will enable the tech support helpdesk employee to determine a solution to your problem.

  3. Step 3

Look through your software or computer documentation to find the phone number of the tech support helpdesk. Pay attention to the hours it operates. Some desks are available 24 hours, while some are only open during business hours.

  4. Step 4

Leave the computer on when you call. Also, leave it online. Many companies can remotely access your computer and look directly at the problem. This is not available for all programs and computers, but is becoming more prevalent.

  5. Step 5

Follow the tech support operator's directions. This person is making an educated guess in order to fix your computer. If he asks you to click specific icons and type certain things, follow the instructions.
