Step1
Perform regular maintenance. Maintenance should be done in June and September. Cut excess bamboo off regularly and keep the bamboo pruned. Catch new shoots before they continue to grow. Bamboo's root system spreads under the soil, so use a hay hook or shovel to cut them.
Step2
Give the bamboo plenty of space. This is not a small garden plant. It needs room and you should plant them no closer than 3 feet apart. Bamboo can be used instead of hedges on property lines and for other barriers.
Step3
Skip the barriers. There are many barriers available that are designed to help stunt the growth of the bamboo. These are generally ineffective. The bamboo tends to grow over the barrier or burst through it. The barrier can also damage the bamboo or not allow it the proper growth and nutrition it needs.
Step4
Take control of the bamboo and don't let it control you. You have to decide the shape, size and length of the shoots. If you don't prune regularly, it will take over the area and get completely out of control. Prune often and prune smart.
